                The grand celebration of World Siddha Day

                                                                             as

                       World Siddha Doctors Meet 2011

              In continuation of the resolution passed by the General Body including Siddha Committee of Central Council of India Medicine held on 27th august 2008, World Siddha day took its grand shape in National Institute of Siddha on 14th April 2009. It is a milestone in the History of Siddha, It was really a great celebration with opening of  Thirumoolar statue in the campus of NIS, an apex Institute of Siddha by the Goverment of Tamil Nadu and Government of India

              As per the Tamil culture Vasantha Kaalam ( Elaveenil) falls in Chitirai and that too on Full Moon Day ( Pournami), the people of Tamil Nadu have the belief that Siddhars assemble on the same day to plan for the welfare of the humanity. Following this, even today Siddha Practitioners visit Pothigai malai—Agathiyar Mottai and celebrate the day as as Agathiyar Festival.

             This same day only the blooming of the Earth occurs i.e. Pooneeru appears on the earth . Every year Pooneeru proves the relationship between the creatures in earth and stars in the Galaxy including moon.

Due to some objections raised by a few people in our Head Quarters,  this year World Siddha Day was celebrated as World Siddha Doctors Meet under the Chairmanship of Dr.V.Stanley Jones and Dr.V.Arunachalam was the Coordinator.

             I am proud to play a role as Joint Secretary of the Committee and I am very thankful to Dr.V.Stanly Jones , Dr.V.Arunachalam, Dr.S.Boopathiraj and Dr.N.Sellamuthu who were the foundation pillars of  World Siddha Day. I  assure that we will overcome any hurdles in the future and the World Siddha Day will be celebrated every year  in a grand manner.

MEDICINE PREPARATION

    

         Dr .D. Velayudam of TMK  participated as a special invitee in the WORKSHOP ON SIDDHA FORMULATIONS  organized by students of M.Sc. Plant Biology and plant Bio-Technology of S.D.N.B. Vaishnav College for Women , Chrompet on March 12.

           Dr.D.Velayudam highlighted the significance of the siddha medicine and the medicinal herbs in day-to-day life. Students were given hands on training on the preparation of Amukkara legium, Nannari syrup, Face cream and Herbal oil.

           Speakers at this programme motivated the students to know the subject in depth and the importance of herbal plants. They stressed the need of researchers in the Siddha field and the things to be done in Siddha Medicine.

      For urinary problems like Oliguria and BPH, The dried powder of the root is given along with milk.

It is used in summer season in the form of Nannari Manapagu

            At the Annual Day Celebration of Thiruvalluvar Mazhaliyar Elementary school on 2nd April 2011 Dr.D.Velayudam participated and distributed the prizes

MAKKAL TV –LIVE

 

On March 31st, Dr .D. Velaudham , TMK  participated in MAKKAL TV –LIVE SHOW ’’ MARUTHUVA NERAM’’.

              In the live show he explained the  prevention and management of DISEASES OCCURING IN SUMMER SEASON, and also clarified the doubts of viewers.     Tamizh Maruthuva Kazhagam in coordination with MAKKAL TV jointly organised a COOKING  Show , PARAMPARIYA SAMAYAL for promoting Traditional Foods. The show is being  telecasted every Monday between 1.00 -1.30 pm.

Members of TMK Dr.A.Kirubagaran, Dr.S.Senthil   karunakaran and Dr.P.Hemalatha  demonstrated the herbal food preparation and explained their medicinal importance.

THETRAN SEEDS-WATER PURIFYING

 

        Seeds of the plant species Strychnos  potatorum and Moringa oleifera contain naturalpolyelectrolytes which can be used as coagulants to purify turbid waters. In laboratory tests, direct filtration of a turbid surface water (turbidity 15–25 NTU,  heterotrophic bacteria280–500 cfu ml 21, and fecal coliforms 280– 500 MPN 100 ml 21 ),        With seeds of S. potatorum or M.oleifera as coagulant, produces a substantial improvement in its aesthetic and       microbiological quality (turbidity 0.3–1.5 NTU, heterotrophic bacteria 5–20 cfu ml 21, and fecal coliforms 5–10MPN 100ml21). The method      appears  suitable for home water treatment in rural areas of developing countries. These natural coagulants produce a ‘low risk’ water; however, additional disinfection or boiling should be practised during localised outbreaks/epidemics of enteric infections.

World Health Day – 7 April 2011

 

The theme for World Health Day 2011 is

“Antimicrobial resistance and its global spread”  
                  We live in an era of medical breakthroughs with new wonder drugs available to treat conditions that a few decades ago, or even a few years ago in the case of HIV/AIDS, would have proved fatal. In the World Health Day 2011, WHO is going to launch a worldwide campaign to safeguard these medicines for future generations. Antimicrobial resistance and its global spread threatens the continued effectiveness of many medicines used today to treat the sick, while at the same time it risks jeopardizing important advances being made against major infectious killers.

Modern medicine and its treatment greatly depend on antibiotics and other microbial medicines. These medicines have been a great boon to life threatening diseases like pneumonia, T.B, malaria, HIV/AIDS  etc. The treatment of serious and infectious diseases has been a major breakthroughs in development of drugs in the last century. However , this advantage could be lost through the spread of antimicrobial resistance.Many infectious diseases may resurface again , become uncontrollable and rapidly spread all over the world and the world of medicine may regress to the pre-antibiotic era.The use of antimicrobial agents and antibiotics in animal that provide food can create resistance problems for human beings. WHO is launching a six point combat in the spread of antimicrobial resistance.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is resistance of a microorganism to an microbial medicine to which it was previously sensitive. Resistant organism like bacteria , viruses and parasites withstand attacks by antimicrobial medicine , such as antibiotics, and anti-malarials. Thus , standard treatment become ineffective and infections persist and may spread to others.AMR is the result of the use and misuse of antimicrobial medicines and develops when a microorganism mutates or acquires resistance gene.

Antimicrobial Activity of Some Important Siddha Medicinal Plant Against Plant and Human Pathogens The   methanol   leaf   extracts   of  Acacia   nilotica(karuvel), Sida cordifolia(chitramutti), Tinospora cordifolia(seenthil),Withania somnifera(amukkara) and Ziziphus mauritiana(semai illanthai) showed significant antibacterial activity against Bacillus subtilis,Escherichia coli,  Pseudomonas fluorescens, Staphylococcus aureus and Xanthomonas axonopodis pv.malvacearum and antifungal activity against Aspergillus flavus, Dreschlera turcica and Fusarium verticillioides when compare to root/ bark extracts. A. nilotica and S. cordifolia leaf extract showed highest.antibacterial   activity   against   B.   subtilis.  and  Z.  mauritiana  leaf  extract  showed  significant  activity against X. a. pv. malvacearum. Root and leaf extract of S. cordifolia recorded significant activity against all the  test bacteria. A. nilotica bark and leaf extract showed significant antifungal activity against A. flavus,Ziziphus mauritiana and Tinospora cordifolia recorded significant antifungal activity against D. turcica Themethanol extract of Sida cordifolia exhibited significant antifungal activity against F. verticillioides.

Ingredients

Kasakasa       -one cup

Jaggery            -1\2 cup

Cashew nuts  -25 grams

Dry grapes     -25 grams

Ghee               -50grams

Method of preparation;

              Fry the Kasakasa in a dry vessel and allow it to cool, mix it with jaggery and grind it minimally. Add Cashew and Dry grapes fried in ghee. With the help of ghee make them into small sized spheres.

Medicinal uses;

It is a very good cooling agent, it helps to cure sleeping disorders, and also control diarrhea and dysentery.

Siddha strengthens the hands of National Rural Health Mission

          In the international forum ,our country has been mostly appreciated, for its National Rural Health Mission. In our largest Democratic country, the treatment for the president should be on par  with a lower level, poverty citizen. I would like to remember an incidence in the history of Indian Government, Secretary General of UNO Mr.PAN KE MOON visited union Health Minister’s Cabin to appreciate Dr.Anbumani Ramadoss for his implementation of NRHM, and more over he asked other nations to follow NRHM in their countries.

            Practically, it is highly impossible to provide Health for all citizen up to village level only with Modern System of Medicine. Integration of Health Systems is a need of time to reach Health up to the level of village.

              Siddha system has been included in the scheme and easily join hands with the villagers with its eco-friendly nature.

              Siddha physicians joined in NRHM should feel that they are having a great opportunity to promote and propagate the siddha system in the root level of the   country. Be remember our father of Nation Mahatma Gandhi says`` INDIA IS LIVING IN    VILLAGES ’’

Siddha medicine and lifestyle

 A workshop at the inter collegiate level was organized by the PG department of Plant Biology and Biotechnology of SNDB Vaishnava College for Women, Chrompet, Chennai-44.on 12.03.2011.Dr.D.Velayudam.of Tamizh Maruthuva Kazhagam address the students on the same day on the topic “Siddha Medicine and Lifestyle”.

A competition on the siddha drug preparation was held their. Preparations like, Nanari manapagu, Amukkara lehium, Kunkiliya kalimbu, Dhaniya laddu, Nellikai lehium, Face cream, Pain balmm, Mathan oil,  and they exhibit the prepared drugs.

 This year the World siddha Day is going to be held at Thiruvananthapuram , in the name World Siddha Doctors Meet-2011, on 14th and 15th April 2011.

KNOW ABOUT HERBS : ASHOKA

  

              Saraca indica as a wild tree, the Ashoka is a    vulnerable species. It is becoming rarer in its natural habitat, but       isolated wild Ashoka trees are still to be found in the foothills of central and eastern Himalayas, in scattered locations of the northern plains of India as well as on the west coast of the Subcontinent near Mumbai.

              There are a few varieties of the Ashoka tree. One variety is larger and highly spreading. The columnar varieties are common in cultivation.

Medicinal use  

The bark of the asoka tree is used to make a drug, which is   reported to possess a stimulating effect on the       endometrium and ovarian    tissue

. The use of the dried flower is one of the best doses, which helps in curing the diabetes. We may be eaten regularly.

The bark of the tree is useful for the above clinical indications of the internal piles.

ADHIMADHURAM - HOW IT WORKS

The herb contains         glycyrrhizin, glycyrrhetinic acid, flavonoids, asparagine,               iso-flavonoids,and chalcones.

              Licorice contains the     glycoside, glycyrrhizin which has a   similar structure and activity as the  adrenal steroids. Licorice has an anti-inflammatory activity similar to cortisone and has been found  useful for arthritis and allergies.       Licorice also acts like the hormone, ACTH, causing sodium retention, potassium depletion, and       water retention.       

         Excess consumption of licorice can lead to the classic symptoms of       hypertension, with edema, increased blood pressure, potassium loss, and muscular weakness.

            The Deglycyrrhizinated form is most often used to avoid the hypertensive side effects of the glycyrrhetinic acid in whole Licorice. Licorice and DGL have a mild laxative effect and canprotect the intestinal lining by     increasing the production of mucus, thus alleviating heartburn and ulcers.

           Licorice and DGL also have a demulcent     action and  have been used for coughs and other bronchial complaints.
