PIPER BETEL-HEPATOPROTECTIVE
An in vivo study was conducted to evaluate the hepatoprotective activity of ethanolic extracts of Piper betel  leaves. Liver damage was induced in male Wister rats weighed 150-200 gm by administering CCl4 (2ml/kg i.p) regularly for 10days and tissue damage was noted by various biochemical parameters like serum glutamate oxaloacetate transaminase (SGOT),
serum glutamate Pyruvate transaminase (SGPT), Alkaline Phosphatase (ALP), Acid Phosphatase (ACP), Lipidperoxidation, Level of antioxidant enzy -me like catalase (CAT), Superoxide dismutase (SOD), Glutathione (GSH) in liver. Ethanolic extract of piper betel 100 mg/kg and 200 mg/kg i.p administered regularly for 10 days and compared with acontrol group silymarin (25 mg/kg i.p.).
A significant reduction in serum SGOT, SGPT, ALP, ACP, lipid peroxidation andimprovement in CAT, SOD, GSH, MDA level in the liver were observed when compared with CCl4 administered rats.
Piper betel leaves extract (PBLE) was able to protect the liver against the oxidative damage produced by CCl4.

 LIVING WITH PSORIASIS
The thick, red, scaly skin of psoriasis can be not only painful but also embarrassing.  Most people get psoriasis on their elbows, knees, scalp, back, face, palms and feet. It can show up on other parts of the body, too, including fingernails, toenails, genitals and inside the mouth. Besides being uncomfortable, these patches of skin can make you self-conscious about the way you look. Psoriasis can be socially isolating for many people,"  "Often, people can become depressed."Psoriasis is not a disease you can catch from others. It's caused by an overactive immune system. The immune system essentially raises false alarms, which lead to   inflammation and a rapid turnover of skin cells. Normally, skin cells take about a month to grow deep in your skin and then rise to the surface. In psoriasis, the cells rise in a matter of days, before they have a chance to mature. The new cells and existing cells all pile up on the surface of the skin. The result is redness, irritation and discomfort.

unfortunately, psoriasis can affect more than just the skin. It causes some people to have swollen joints and arthritis. Studies have also linked psoriasis to higher risks for diabetes, obesity, abnormal cholesterol, strokes and heart attacks.
For these reasons, it's especially important for psoriasis patients to get their blood pressure checked, quit smoking if they smoke and maintain a healthy body weight," Gelfand says. Researchers are continuing to look into the causes of psoriasis. The genes you inherit affect your chances of getting the disease, but other factors are also involved, too. "We're understanding more about psoriasis every day that the past decade has brought about more treatments for psoriasis than ever before. Doctors now have many more options to help their patients manage and cope with the disorder.

AMUKKARA - How it works
Alkaloids, steroidal lactones, saponins and withanolides are thought to be the biologically active components. Studies have pointed to cyclooxygenase inhibition as the cause of the herb's anti-arthritis properties. Amukkara's anti-inflammatory effects were comparable to hydrocortisone sodium succinate in rats. The root extract of the herb produced significant increases in hemoglobin concentration, red blood cell count, white blood cell count and platelet count. Amukkara has been shown to exhibit antioxidant effects in the brain and to have a tranquilizing effect on the central nervous system in animals. In vitro, isolates from the root of the plant have cytotoxic properties against H-460, HCT-116, SF-268 and MCF-7 cell lines. Amukkara increase cytotoxic T lymphocyte production. Other studies show amukkara's cytotoxicity is related to its structure and that it enhances ATPase and inhibits succinate dehydrogenase activity, impairing oxidative phosphorylation. In animal studies, amukkara can increase the effects of radiation therapy and inhibits tumor growth. The herb also reduces tumor GSH levels which may contribute to the enhancement of radiation response. Amukkara can reverse paclitaxel induced neutropenia in mice. Significant toxicity was observed at high doses in animal studies, however, toxicity studies in humans are limited.

world cancer day

At a time when Cancer still remains a feared and dreaded disease, our headline - “Cancer can be prevented too” may sound a bit incredible, and clichéd, more so as cancer still remains the leading cause of death worldwide. For this reason, it has been a constant endeavor by the WHO and the International Union against Cancer to address ways to reduce the burden of cancer, and the (4th of February) each year is dedicated as World Cancer Day.
The theme for 2010 looks at a key facet - Prevention of Cancer.
The WHO makes no qualms about the fact that in the
absence of timely intervention, cancer can claim the lives of 84 million people worldwide between 2005 and 2015, with the low and middle-income countries bearing the brunt as compared to the industrialized ones. If that’s not all, the burden of cancer is estimated to double by 2020 and nearly triple by 2030. According to the forecasted figures for 2030, there are likely to be 20-26 million fresh cancer diagnoses and 13-17 million cancer related deaths. China, Russia, and India need to watch out and tackle the growing burden of cancer, attributed mainly to increase in use of tobacco, fatty diets, adoption of western habits, and demographic changes. It is possible to reduce the risks of cancer and move closer to prevention of the disease.
The use of tobacco is linked with a number of different cancers including lung cancer. Tobacco also increases the risk of other types of cancers such as cancer of the pancreas, mouth, throat, cervix, and bladder. Tobacco also triggers other chronic respiratory diseases as well as cardiac disease.
Smoking accounts for 90% of lung cancer cases. A smoker carries a fourteen fold risk of dying due to cancer and a double risk of dying due to a heart attack.

Almost 4000 potentially toxic chemicals found in tobacco are inhaled into the system due to smoking. The chemicals found in tobacco lower the body’s immunity to fight infections. Further, tobacco gradually begins to harm the vital organs in the body, especially the heart and the lungs.

varalkarapan - Scabies

வரள் கரப்பான் -

The signs and symptoms of Varal karappan  can be correlated with the clinical features of scabies. The Modern aspect of Scabies is discussed here.
Definition:
It is a form of itching dermatosis  characterized by epidermal burrows, pruritic inflammatory  papules and nodules caused by female sarcoptes scabiei or its products.

PARASITOLOGY:
Sarcoptes scabiei Var hominis has an oviod body, flattened dorsoventrally. The adult female measures approximately 0.4mm long by 0.3mm broad, and the smaller made 0.2mm long by 0.15mm broad. The body is creamy white and it is marked by transverse corrugations and on its dorsal surface by bristles and spines (denticles). There are four pairs of short legs the anterior two pairs end in elongated peduncles tipped with small suckers. In the female the near two pairs of legs end in long bristles (setae) where as in the male bristles are present on the third pair and elongated peduncles on the fourth.
Copulation occurs in a small burrow excavated by the female. After copulation, the fertilized  female enlarges the burrow and lays eggs. The burrow is not confined to the stratum corneum, but is inclined   downwards in to the epidermis. Gradual penetration appears to occur as a result of the production of a lytic secretion by the mite, which then proples itself forward as the host tissue is dissolved.  The burrow is lengthened by approximately 2-3mm daily . Eggs and mite faeces are deposited behind the female in the burrow. Six – legged larvae emerge from the eggs after 3 days and escape from the burrow by cutting cay  through its roof. The larvae then dig short burrows (Moulding Pockets) in which they transform into lymphs. After further moults adult males and females develop.
The mites show a preference for certain sites in which to burrow, and appear to avoid areas with a high density of pilosebaceous follicles. The average number of adult female mites on an individual suffering from the common form of scabies is about 12. Only in crusted (Norwegian) Scabies are large numbers of mites are present.
